Great read in historical fiction. Diverse characters developed skillfully. I really found this book to be a page turner. Glad I was able to read it with the Evening Edition book club.

I DNF’d One Thousand White Women. I was 100 pages in and I just couldn’t get into it and the writing made me uncomfortable. The author characterized nearly every racial stereotype there is, and quite frankly, it was offensive. Especially…

This historical fiction novel is based on an 1854 request of 1000 white brides by a group of northern Cheyenne chiefs. Fergus brings his journalist background to bear in creating a compelling storyline, but there are a number of…

1854- a Native American request is made for 1000 white brides to insure peace. Mary Dodd, released from an asylum to be one of those "white brides" describes her journey. This is an interesting historical fiction read that touches on the…

A friend who teaches social work insisted I read this. It didn't really work for me. The horrors of being a woman before we had any rights at all is in there, but as with most alternative history stories, the narrator has to engage in…

This is the first book in a 2 book series. Unfortunately, I read them out of order so I already knew the outcome of this book before I started it. Although there were 2 decades between the publishing of the 2 books, I read them within a…

I read this mesmerizing account of a woman's life in the American Old West because my book group had selected it for discussion. It does make an excellent discussion book, as it brings up issues such as cultural differences and how people…

A fictional account of a woman participating in a secret government program in the 1870s seeking to assimilate the Northern Cheyenne into white "civilization" through marriage (the exchange of a thousand white women for a thousand Cheyenne…

I was so disappointed to find out this account was fiction. Yes, disappointed, but yet amazed that an author could so completely wrap me in the story hook, line and sinker. Jim Fergus did his job. I’m doing more research on the Brides for…

I wanted to like this book, but it read like a novel from the perspective of a woman written by a man (a man, who has never met or interacted with a woman).

I gave this book a four star rating mostly for the last section of the book more than for the book as a whole. It is a fast-moving, easy to read novel that fits well into what I call the "Summer Reading" category. As much as I enjoyed…

May Dodd was so courageous and open minded, her ability to be supportive to those around her gave her the strength to meet each day with calm and energy. I really loved her character and wish there was a series based on her. I am always…

Extremely believable. Carefully told. Amazingly good story about a woman even though written by a man. Engaging and heart-wrenching.

A longer read but a decent one. The premise of the story is great for discussion concerning 1000 white women being handed over to Natives and being expected to become wives of the tribesmen. Good historical perspectives in addition to…

I loved this book. May Dodd was definitely a misfit in her society but I liked her. The book dealt with the conquering of the native people by the whites. Interesting day to day details of native life and the old west.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story; the cultural differences, the eccentric cast of characters, and the voice of the narrator, May Dodd. Highly recommended for a unique story line.

An interesting and unusual idea for a book, however the writing itself was not that great. I think it picked up near then end but apparently some readers quit before that.

have read better treatments of the native American vs Great White Father. Did not enjoy the broad dialects and in general thought it needed editing

Great book! Excellent insight into the Native Amercian "resettlement". While fictional, much of what happened, minus the main plot-line, could have been real. Great read.
