Of course this sounds like an easy thing to do, but our society is so fast paced, driven and ultra connected to technology and all of this makes getting a restful sleep experience a real challenge. This book is loaded with sleep research, stories from top performing athletes including Kobe Bryant and Amazon CEO Jeff Besos and more. Loads of idea’s and actionable steps to start getting a better nights sleep tonight. You can even fill out a sleep quality questionnaire to assess where you’re at and learn about meditations that will help to put you to sleep.
It's a good book with really important information, but the redundancy and literal repetitions (she sometimes repeats sentences word-for-word) got to me after a while.
I have struggled with sleep issues for years. It never bothered me until my mid-thirties and then it all caught up to me. When I did fall asleep I'd wake up in places other than the bedroom doing weird things like building a castle out of Nilla Wafers. In addition to that I'd fall asleep at wildly inappropriate times throughout the day (like in meetings). I have been working ever since to make sure that I get this under control and wanted to see if the Huffsters book had any worthwhile tips.
First, she provides her own experience with sleep disorders and that made me thankful that I have never woken up in a pool of my own blood. She goes on to compile a slew of statistics that illustrate how prevalent a problem sleep deprivation has become. Some of these have to be taken with a grain of salt (I don't know how you can assign an exact dollar amount to lost productivity and to say that women have added 256 working hours per year since 1969 is misleading. Multiply by 47 and divide by 3 billion roughly to get the per woman average and it's not nearly as startling a number). Despite my unwillingness to accept the stats whole-heartedly, she does include enough data to show that there is definitely a problem.
The sleep science section is really intriguing and there are some useful tips but nothing you probably haven't heard before (remove electronics, use valerian root and guided meditation, etc.) Read and experiment on your own to find out what works for you. And whatever you do, don't take Ambien and then do book reviews!
Excellent!! Bits a humor throughout to help keep it interesting. Many interesting facts to support the argument for sleep.
The book is pretentious and replete with clichés, providing perhaps some useful thoughts only to those who have never read anything else about sleep-related issues. I was surprised (and distressed) to find that we have 35 copies in the Ottawa Library system. It goes to prove that a good title can attract buyers ... but a library?
It's a helpful book, however it could have easily been condensed into 50 pages. There are many tips in this book that can help anyone who is struggling with sleep, but if that's what you are looking for I recommend just reading several articles online about sleep. I would not recommend this book to a friend.
I would agree with one thing only: anyone who has ever been paying attention to that fraudster, Ariana Huffington, and takes her seriously or at face value, must indeed be seriously sleep- and brain-deprived.
This is a useful and important book. The author makes a compelling case that most people today are sleep-deprived, with devastating impacts on both physical and mental health. Inadequate sleep increases the risk of dementia. Sleep-inducing drugs are dangerous and do not promote healthy sleep. The book includes useful tips for improving sleep naturally. Sleep is as important to health as diet and exercise. Read this book, and sleep well!
This is an important book to read. The book tells us very clearly how a minimal amount of sleep is a must for us to live a healthy, productive life. The statistics provided bears testament to this. I would have liked some more methods of how to go about getting the required sleep.
Quells any doubt about the essential value of sleep. With suggestions for helping oneself sleep enough.
I'm a fan of Arianna Stassinopoulos but found this book to be somewhat disappointing. It's written more like a newspaper article filled with statistics rather than an exciting book filled with new and helpful information on how to get more high quality sleep. She does provide some info on getting more sleep but most of the book is regarding the data of sleep deprivation.
