I found it dragged out and not funny.
The lead actors seem like they were forcing their roles, where as the co-stars did a great job with what they had to work with & were pretty much the only reason worth watching the movie in my opinion.
My youngest thought it was good.
My eldest did not like it.
Will be showing them the original over the weekend.
Romance comedy. As the title suggests, it uses the original "Overboard" story formula but successfully makes it a different story using 2 lead characters with different backgrounds. For me, the lead male seemed too feminine to make me believe he was a playboy millionaire.
A funny remake of this classic comedy—except this time the gender is flipped and Mexican star Eugenio Derbez plays the mega-rich, condescending playboy who falls off his yacht. He loses his memory and winds up being scammed by the very woman he cheated (Anna Faris). She's a widowed single mom holding down two jobs while she studies for her nursing degree. Egged on by her best friend (Eva Longoria), Anna gets revenge by persuading him that they're married, he's an uneducated laborer, an alcoholic in recovery, and a devoted father to her three daughters. General hilarity ensues as he grapples with his new roles and liberal Anglo/conservative Mexican culture clashes. The Norwegian captain and crew view it all with bemusement. There's also a droll/poignant subplot with his scheming sister who wants to lead the family business but is constantly frustrated due to the macho culture. Note: occasional Spanish with English subtitles: great for bilingual families. Family friendly for older kids.
The change in story and ending was refreshing but I thought the commentary quoted and mirrored the original too closely at times. the acting was fine and fun but not as good as the dynamic and skill of Goldie and Kurt.
I like the remake. I wasn't expecting much, but I really like how they changed up the story. Its not just a copycat movie. Well done.
There were big shoes to fill, considering the leads in the original movie.
OK Watched the original over 5 times Barely made it through this one once. The funny parts were spoiled by having to read the subtitles
This movie did not reach the hype of the original. One to stay clear of.......
This movie had to be very careful remaking one of Goldie Hawn's better comedies. In the end the remake didn't even come close. As a stand alone film had some funny moments with an improbable end.
Not as good as the original movie made in 1987 with Kurt Russel and Goldi Hawn. It was ok and I believe if I had not seen the original then I probably would have enjoyed it better. However, I just did not find the reversal of the sexes to work as well. I believe Kurt Russel did a better job of being a low incompetent father who worked as a carpenter and Goldie Hawn's role as the stuck up wealthy women who went overboard to be a better combination. Not a bad movie but just did not measure up with the original.
Decided not to watch, too many negative comments, Tomatometer 25% & audience 57.
No chemistry between the main characters, too long (almost 2 hours), having to read the subtitles so often and for so long disrupted the flow of the action (instead of seeing the actors acting, I was busy reading). Not a good remake.
Felt like a made for TV movie. No chemistry between the two leads, hated having to read the closed caption when they spoke Spanish so often, too long and predictable.
Totally enjoyed this romp. It ain't Shakespeare, but it's not intended to be. I was surprised at how good it was. Combining the Hispanic and American, wealthy and poor cultures was terrific, it sends a great message.
And even though we have the expected ending - getting there was full of surprises and lots of fun. Happy I didn't pay attention to the stars rating!
Don’t know what the original Goldie Hawn version was like, but This was so predictable (and possibly too updated) for me. Didn’t watch much of it.
Surprisingly funny and entertaining...Yes, very predictable and it is a remake, but it was nice how they tried a different spin on things and it is actually good enough that you forget where it came from. Still absurd and completely unbelievable, but worth your time if you want to be amused for an evening.
Premise is still problematic (kidnapping, consent issues, etc) like the original but this remake is a welcome update, much more diverse, and a fun watch.
I liked this movie. It is funny and well acted. However, as a fan of the original Overboard (from the 80's, with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russel), I hate to say, it is not as good as the original.
Hated it. Had a few laughs but romance was completely lost. Leads felt mismatched and unconvincing as love interests. Too much of original script used...literally word for word.
I was surprised by how good this remake was. I loved the Original "Overboard" with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. I was a bit concerned that this movie was just going to poorly repeat the same story, but instead, it was good enough to be a stand alone, with the perfect amount of the old main storyboard parts peppered in, but in a way that wasn't entirely predictable.
I think it would much more enjoyable to watch this one if you are familiar with the first one. If you don't know the original movie, I can see how this story may seem to have a ridiculous plot. But it is charming- give it a chance, suspend your disbelief.
One thing I found amusing... the "poor" family was no where near as poor as the family in the original, which shows how Hollywood standards have changed our perceptions in the last 30 years. But otherwise, a wonderful and romantic comedy. Really worth watching. Funny, cute and sweet.
Not Eugenio Derbez's best work, but his expressions are priceless and the slapstick is hilarious. There is good chemistry between him and his co-stars--especially his "daughters." Sweet, silly, and touching at times, but basically a farce/comedy.
