I missed the perfect window to read this. My younger self would have been enamored. My older self struggles a bit, because it seems to be mostly groundwork for later books in the series. It's highly possible that this is a spinoff of a main series and I'm supposed to know more of what's going on than not, but this is my first McCaffrey, and as such I feel a little adrift. I like the protagonist and I LOVE DRAGONS, so the series seems pretty promising.
Ever wished you had a dragon of your very own? On the planet Pern, some people do. Menolly doesn't have a dragon, but she's seen the tiny, dragon-like fire lizards fishing in the sea. No one knows much about fire lizards, but all that is about to change. . .
One of my favorite of the Pern series so far. Menolly is a more engaging and developed character than any previous characters on Pern. Since finishing this and Dragonsinger I'm reluctant to start Dragondrums as that seems to follow a supporting character from Dragonsinger, Piedmur. A good character in that book but I would definitely rather follow Menolly.
I love this trilogy! Menolly rocks! She's so unsure of herself but she goes ahead and does what she needs to do anyway.
I've read the series multiple times since it was published.
Menolly lives in a world where her musical gifts are looked down upon because she is a girl. This is the story of her trials and how she overcomes this problem. A very entertaining read.
When I was in 4th grade we used to have to line up in the fiction section before leaving the library. I saw this book but couldn't get out of line to check it out, and couldn't find it until I graduated into middle school. Since then I've re-read it many times.
this was an AWESOME read! very unspoiled girl, menolly is. i love beauty, her white queen fire lizard.. <3
Many moons ago, in 1988 to be exact, this book was lent to me by a friend. The first (non-school related) English book I ever read, it started me on the path of sci-fi/fantasy, and is still a favourite of mine after all this time.
A well written coming of age book, lyrical, with a shy but strong main character you can’t help but like. It’s a gentle introduction to the genre and to PERN, suitable for everyone.
A different twist on dragons and dragonlore. Liked the main character. She seemed real with us being sympathetic towards her even though we all knew she had her downfalls.
