A teenage girl relates the generally chaotic events of the summer in encyclopedia entries, most notably "Boy, Blue-Eyed, Who Just Moved In Next Door".

ksoles Nov 04, 2012

This memorable chronicle of one almost-thirteen-year-old girl's summer makes both reference books and footnotes fun to read. Bored while grounded, Tink Aaron-Martin decides to write "The Encyclopedia of Me" in which she includes detailed entries about aspects of her life arranged in alphabetical order. Readers get to know her parents, her brothers, her best friend, her worst enemies and her new, intriguing, blue-haired neighbour.

In this charming coming-of-age story, Tink survives a realistic mix of serious and not-so-serious dilemmas: wiping out while skateboarding, sorting out feelings about a first crush and navigating an embarrassing birthday party to name a few. The "peacemaker" in her family, she also has to stay sane in a chaotic house with older twin brothers, one of whom has autism.

Though Tink sometimes holds her tongue when her best friend does something phony or out of character, she remains honest with herself and in her narrative. As she comes to realizations about her friends, her family, and her future, she takes the time to appreciate what she has. She becomes unafraid to stand up for both the people she cares about and herself, a quality that makes her an ideal heroine for young teens.
