The title says it all: the apocalypse is happening but it is slow (first dramatic moment occurs on page 290!). So forgettable that it wasn't until the last 30 pages that I realized that I had read this book before. Interesting premise but major snooze-fest.

A view of worldwide destruction due to an engineered bacteria destroying all of the earths oil. The domino effect of this destruction is very frightening. The main action is taking place in southern California, terrible enough, but throw in earthquake, fire and mobs and you have a cauldron of fear and misery influencing each human's moral choices. How do you save your family?
An exciting read.

A huge disappointment from the legendary John Varley. My theory is that a novice writer with survivalist sentiments has high-jacked the Varley name and good will to advance the theory that all is well when the menfolk rule the roost, women support their men, and children are remarkably obedient.

I won't be looking for anything new from Mr. Varley - I'll be re-reading some of his splendid earlier works.

"Despite wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as 9/11, the United States' dependence on foreign oil has kept the nation tied to the Middle East. A scientist has developed a cure for America's addiction -- a slow-acting virus that feeds on petroleum, turning it solid. But he didn't consider that his contagion of a Saudi oil field could spread to infect the fuel supply of the entire world... In Los Angeles, screenwriter Dave Marshall heard this scenario from a retired U.S. Marine and government insider who acted as a consultant on Dave's last film. It sounded as implausible as many of his scripts, but the reality is much more frightening than anything he could have envisioned. An ordinary guy armed with extraordinary information, Dave hopes his survivor's instinct will kick in so he can protect his wife and daughter from the coming apocalypse that will alter the future of Earth -- and humanity..." I found this to be a very interesting story and had a hard time putting the book down for long. It had a fairly fast pace with a good amount of action. The only criticism I have is that he goes into a lot of detail about various areas of Los Angeles. If you are not familiar with this area, all the detail can be confusing because you can't figure out which way people are going. A map of the area included in the book would have been helpful. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys reading books with a 'what if' scenario.

I loved the book but the way the virus worked confused me slightly.

Half way through this book. Wish I had more time to get back to it. Great so far!

I'm a huge fan of Varley's, so I began this book with delighted anticipation. It's written as well as his other novels, but it has an entirely different pace. I literally couldn't stop reading it once I started (in an immediate sense because I certainly kept reading his previous books). The sf premise is excellent, the characterizations are great and the answer he presents to the question about what would happen to our current societies if the supply of petroleum was threatened is brutally honest. A different, breath-taking ride of a story.
