Mason Starling has suddenly found herself in the last place she expected. Hell.
After watching Fennrys Wolf shot in the should, by her brother, and falling to the ground from the top of a speeding train, she is lost.
Is Fenn dead?
What is she doing here?
Her mother leads her on a quest through Helhaim to find the Odin Spear.
By taking this spear up, she can return to the mortal realm, and find Fenn.
Little does she know that this spear, once taken up, will start an unstoppable chain of events. Ones that will lead to the end of the world.
Fennrys, though, is fully aware of this, and after all the things he's been through, he insists on finding her.
He starts on a journey to find Mason and stop her from taking the spear in her hands.
The only question is: Will he make it in time?

Descendant is the second book in a series called Starling by Lesley Livingston. First off is you haven’t read the first book in the series, I highly recommend you do. Although you can still understand the plot of Descendant without it, it makes it a lot easier to understand the back story of the main characters and it is also a very compelling novel. Descendant mainly takes place in Manhattan. The story follows the growing love of Mason Starling and a man named Fennrys Wolf. Although one of the main themes is young love there are many other plots and side stories which the reader can be immersed in. Livingston does a fantastic job of describing the scenes and character emotions to the point where I can actually picture everything happening in my head.

The characters in Descendant are all interesting and diverse. They range from gods with a compassion for humanity to power hungry humans with a destructive mindset. What I really enjoyed about the characters is how situations and obstacles they had to overcome, caused them to develop quickly but still in a way where I could relate to them. Another thing I enjoyed was the way the story moved quickly from one scene to another but had a great flow to it. It wasn’t all over the place and it didn’t stand still for too long. The way Livingston included Greek and Norse mythology into the novel was also interesting. Although I don’t know if it is historically correct, I can say it’s a very well thought out concept and Livingston should be proud of her creativity.

All in all Descendant was a very good read and I would recommend it to teens looking for an action packed novel, with a bit of romance to boot. I give Descendant 4 out of 5 stars.
