When notorious serial killer Joe Carroll (Purefoy) escapes from death row and embarks on a new killing spree, the FBI calls former agent Ryan Hardy (Bacon), a psychologically scarred veteran who captured Carroll nine years earlier, after Carroll murdered 14 female students on a college campus where he taught literature. Knowing Carroll better than anyone and close with Carroll's ex-wife, Claire, Hardy works closely with an FBI team, which includes no-nonsense agent Jennifer Mason and sharp upstart Mike Weston, and soon discovers that Carroll was not only communicating with a network of killers in the outside world, but has much more planned than just a prison escape - and there's no telling how many additional killers are out there. As Hardy and the FBI team are challenged by the ever-growing web of murder around them, masterminded by the diabolical Carroll (who's writing a novel with Hardy as his protagonist), Hardy will not only get a second chance to capture Carroll, but another shot at redemption, as he's faced with not one but an entire cult of serial killers.

.
This show tries to glom off the success of others in the serial killer genre like Dexter and Hannibal. Unfortunately it has neither the humor of the former or the creepiness of the latter. Instead it has lots and lots AND LOTS of mostly innocent bystanders getting their throats slashed and almost as many instances of the FBI making the worst possible decision. There's close to zero character development and the main reason to watch the next episode is to see how ridiculous it gets.
.
I did enjoy James Purefoy's performance as the demented cult leader but even that eventually runs out of steam as he is supplanted by another and another AND YET ANOTHER crop of wackos for Kevin Bacon to blast away.
.
I believe the moral of the story is that EVERYONE you know (your coworkers, your neighbors, your friends, your family) - THEY ARE ALL SERIAL KILLERS AND YOU NEED TO BE VERY AFRAID AND IF YOU'RE NOT - THEN YOU ARE MOST DEFINITELY A SERIAL KILLER!

A bit like Criminal Minds--but the lead character is slightly more interesting than the leads in CM and the supporting characters very much less interesting that the ones in CM. Because the focus in on catching one "super villain," if you don't find him fascinating then the show isn't fascinating--and I found him very dull and derivative. I am not going to watch the other two seasons.

If you like thrillers or are a fan of the show Criminal Minds, this is a great series. The third season became a bit ridiculous and drawn out. The first two seasons are much better. It was appropriate to end during the third season.

Halfway thru Season 1. Ready to give up. At best, The Following is a Love-to-Hate show, but getting tired of it. It reminds me of 24. Most authorities are stupid, most villains are even dumber. Actions and consequences make no sense. We're supposed to emphathize with a select few sanctimonious characters or wide-eyed innocents (who seem to be protected by Zeus).

I agree with most comments here, like:
the plot is as transparent as a book written for a ten year-old
graphic violence laughable, Bacon looks wan and old
brain candy... the show is completely ridiculous
I lost interest it in it about half way the first season
why you shouldn't do a series just because you can. The script is attrocious, using every manipulative trick in the soap formula to keep the series going. Pretentious junk food for the masses that takes itself too seriously to even be considered "so bad it is good".

I liked this Series. Action packed, and never a dull moment. Shows a Serial Killer can come from any walk of life.

Maybe my expectations were too high for this series on a recommendations from siblings, but I was thoroughly disappointed by this show. I found the graphic violence laughable, Bacon looks wan and old, and the show overall is dull and boring. Not recommended.

Yeah, its pretty bad. Bad writing, bad acting (over acting). Yet, I keep watching it. It is definitely brain candy. The whole premise of the show is completely ridiculous. A bunch of serial killers living together in a death cult. The very nature of a psychopath is that they are anti-social. Anyhow, if you just want to pass the time with something to make fun of, you will probably enjoy this.

It was good in the beginning. but I lost interest it in it about half way the first season. I dot think I am going to be getting the second season. Not my cup of tea.

Exciting, yet frustrating-- good performances, yet formulaic-- handsome actors, yet unlikable characters-- clever plot twists, yet predictable-- quick pacing, yet unnecessary flashbacks-- emotional love story, yet over-the-top violence. This first in the series is in a word, uneven. A tight, well-written drama knows when to quit, this one just goes on and on showing how much blood and guts it can show, before you need to fast forward. It's hard to believe this series ran on broadcast network t.v.! I'm only sorry to say I had to keep watching to see how things would turn out. But I did definitely shower afterwards.

4 stars for the extreme concept of the killer cult, but one star for the repetitive inept FBI/police counter efforts.

Joey: Why is my dad such a bad man?
Emma: Maybe, he's not so bad. Maybe we just don't understand him.

Carroll: You know, the human eye is connected by seven muscles. I removed each one individually. You know how hard that is to do?

Ryan: So what's my sequel about, Joe? Everyone outside is anxious to know.
Carroll: Umm. Well, it's going to be a collaboration. We're going to write this together, Ryan. You know, my first book was... clearly too avant garde. Lost in literati pretense. Now my new story... will play to a much wider audience. Even Poe whored himself out eventually.

Ryan: If this book ends with anything other than your death, you'd better plan on a rewrite.
