Although I have generally enjoyed movies starring Nicholas Cage, I really didn't like this one. Nasty and incoherent. I didn't make it through to the end, so I don't rule out the possibility that it suddenly became wonderful after I stopped watching it, but it still wouldn't have compensated for my pain.

What a great movie about a man just wanting to be free but will do anything to protect others, whats irking though... and it is factual, is that others just stand by and hold law and justice to paper when you know the right thing to do.

Best movie Nic Cage has been in for a long time.

This is a real and raw and gritty slice of life that probably many of us would like to pretend didn’t exist but it does. That’s what makes it deeply meaningful to watch. Every character is delicately developed and fully present. The performance of the late Gary Poulter, an actual homeless man who plays an alcoholic father, exudes a genuineness that is both superb and, at times, difficult to view.

Very good movie. Cage and his co-stars are all excellent, including Ronny Gene Blevins, who plays the main villain, Willie. If you look up the history of the actor who plays the character Tye's father (Gary Poulter), you'll find it both inspiring and desperately sad.

Real gritty. Dark side of humanity. But the hero always prevails... These are real people who were asked to act. Definitely "R".

Nicolas Cage brings things to movies that you have to block.
This movie has a good raw feel to it. It could have been 5-8 minutes shorter.

"Joe" has bad people doing bad things. People who don't make good decisions. But, they do sometimes make better decisions. Sometimes. When it matters. Plenty violent. But a good end. Really liked the characters of Joe and Gary.

I lasted about 10 minutes and then I'd had enough.

Joe: "You look like a million bucks. You feel better now?"
Gary: "I feel like a hundred bucks."

Joe: Yeah, it is. You look at me like I can make a move. What are you thinking when you look at me like that? Don't you care? I don't know who I am, but I know what keeps me alive is restraint. Keeps me out of jail. Keeps me from hurting people. A mark of some xyzzed-up faith that there's a reason. A reason for all of this. A reason in most moments I shouldn't do what I wanna do. I do as I'm told. These men who bust their asses work like dogs. And I believe in them, but every day they hurt. They get old, they peel back... There's no frontier anymore. And I watch that boy. I see someone who's... Who's nothing like me, but... He's a child, folks left behind. And he's on the fence, balanced right there.
