Ranger is a golden retriever that is able to travel through time with an old metal first aid kit. He has also been trained as a search and rescue dog. When the first aid kit begins humming, Ranger knows that he will be taken to another time and place. This time he goes to a plantation in Maryland during the days of slavery. Ranger meets a girl named Sarah who is trying to save her little brother Jesse from being sold. Jesse could be bought by someone who lives faraway and they would never see each other again. Sarah decides that they must run away. Ranger stays with the children and keeps watch over them as they make their way north.
