A beautiful and fun book for novice and somewhat experienced rock collectors. The photographs are great. The content is often arranged by category which means we get many different samples of the same rock, for example, there are multiple colored versions of fluorite instead of simply purple or green and there are multicolored quartz samples. This helps the novice gain an understanding that rocks are more than one color, and that coloration is not always the most important aspect in rock and mineral identification. This book is eye candy - so novices stick with it without being discouraged by the straight-up technical guides (with cleavage diagrams, chemical formulas, and one image of one possible sample). Great for novices and rock lovers in general, variety of samples, good information and can help the novice gain a basic understanding of identification. A beautiful and informative guide for young and old. My students continue to enjoy it.
