17-year-old high school senior Imogene has read all of her dad's detective novels numerous times. She's also heard countless times the bedtime story her dad made up about her mom, who abruptly left them when Imogene was two. So when her dad abruptly disappears, Imogene is sure she has the necessary detective skills to find him, and she's sure the key to doing so is tracking down her long-lost mom. The quest that results leads Imogene to many unexpected places, not least of which is a journey of self-discovery into her past, her repressed feelings, and her sense of identity.

Imogene is a more than capable narrator and an engaging protagonist, admirably resourceful and sympathetically flawed. The mystery draws readers in and keeps them guessing, with increasing stakes and risks. The tone and setting are atmospheric. Secondary characters are complex and dynamic. A captivating read.

This book was really good. I read through it pretty quick, the ending wasn't my favorite, but I loved the twist and turns throughout the story.

The moving and enthralling story of a young girl named Imogene whose mystery-writing father disappears. Convinced that he is in search of her birth mother who left them when she was a toddler, Imogene uses all the tricks she's learned from her father's novels to track him down. Alongside the mystery of her parent's disappearance, "Hollow Places" is also a moving examination of mental health in a family, and the importance of allowing ourselves to love and be loved.

Family isn't blood, necessarily; it's a thousand little choices we make every day. We choose to trust each other and forgive each other and go to the pasta place for dinner even though some of us would rather eat sushi.

Because you can't lie to your stepmother over and over again, break into a hospital records storage room, drive all across the state with ill-gotten funds, skip town on a Greyhound without telling anyone, spend the night in a Boston train station, strike out for the coast all on your own, and face zero consequences, I am indeed grounded for quite a while.
