When a devastating famine descended on Soviet Russia in 1921, the United States responded with a massive two-year relief campaign that battled starvation and disease, and saved millions of lives. By summer 1922, American kitchens were feeding nearly eleven million Soviet citizens a day. At the time, the American rescue operation was hailed as "the beau geste of the twentieth century." The American expedition took place as the embers of the 1917 Russian Revolution still smoldered. The nearly 300 American relief workers, most of them veterans of World War I, were the first group of outsiders to break through Russia's isolation and to witness and record the impact of the revolution. This American Experience sets a riveting story of American engagement with a distant and desperate people-an engagement hailed for its efficiency, grit and generosity-within the larger story of the Russian Revolution and the roots of the U.S.-Soviet rivalry that would dominate the second half of the twentieth century. Produced by Austin Hoyt.

This was above average, as per usual with PBS, but I should have read the description more closely. I had thought it was about the causes of the famine and the internal political reaction to it, so the actual gist of the program was interesting but not really what I was looking for - but that's my fault. Made me want to learn more about Herbert Hoover, though.

Got this while the Sochi winter games of 2014 was going on.
Shocked that this happened 90 years ago.
Some of the images were hard to watch, and were gruesome to bear.
In a way I found it strange that America helped Europe in a great time of crisis, but Europe didn't help us in the Great Depression a few years later down the road.
Very informative of the hardships of a country that in the past was dying and now is flourishing.

doc - unbelievable poverty and food conditions world round but specifically in Russia. It's no stretch of the imagination how we got to the agricultural giant we are today.

A fascinating look at the causes of a horrific famine in Russia as well as the roadblocks and political games to correcting it, and the political consequences of giving aid to Russia in the 20's when the dustbowl 30's depression arrived at home. Watch this, you won't regret it!
