When Irene returns to London after a relatively straightforward book theft in Germany, Bradamant informs her that there is a top secret dragon-Fae peace conference in progress that the Library is mediating, and that the second-in-command dragon has been stabbed to death. Tasked with solving the case, Vale and Irene immediately go to 1890s Paris to start their investigation. Once they arrive, they find evidence suggesting that the murder victim might have uncovered proof of treachery by one or more Librarians. But to ensure the peace of the conference, some Librarians are being held as hostages in the dragon and Fae courts. To save the captives, including her parents, Irene must get to the bottom of this murder--but was it a dragon, a Fae, or even a Librarian who committed the crime?

This is another foray into the worlds of the Invisible Library. This time, Irene and company visit an alternate Paris, where the balance of the worlds depend on solving a murder. A fast-paced adventure for those who enjoy a bit of escapism and fantasy.

As the other commenters mention, this is a series that keeps building on itself. This one is all about the diplomacy between chaos and peaceful factions but it was nice to have more Peregrine Vale. I enjoy this series a lot.

I always find the books from this series so engrossing, and this one was no exception. I find the diplomatic balancing act that Irene has to perform to try to please all the factions so interesting. I was pleased to see that so many of the characters from previous books were present and I even enjoyed the new characters but I do wish that Kai had a more central role.

Each book in this series gets better and better. The characters have depth, the action runs at a satisfying pace without sacrificing character development, and this alternate world is fantastic and keeps getting better! Recommend starting from the beginning though!
