Grace hasn't been able to play her cello publicly since a traumatic event at music college years ago. Since then, she's built a quiet life in a small English village, repairing instruments and nurturing her long-distance affair with a married man. But when David saves the life of a woman in the Paris Metro, his resulting fame shines a light onto the real state of the relationships in his life. Shattered, Grace hits rock bottom and abandons everything that has been important to her. Filled with lovable, quirky characters, this poignant novel explores the realities of relationships and heartbreak.

Music shop owner in Kent, UK, Grace Atherton narrates her story of love in Paris, her musical education and business, and three friends who shape her. Plenty of secrets and lies.

Novel is written in first person, not my favorite, but mostly works for loner Grace. Cello is a favorite musical instrument of mine so liked the music making and instrument building aspects of the story. Lots of things work in this debut novel, some don’t. Wonderful characters, surprises keep you reading.

I really liked this debut book. As soon as I finished it I thought that this would make a wonderful movie!
