On October 1st, 2017, over 22,000 people gathered in Las Vegas for the annual Route 91 Harvest music festival, which featured some of country music's biggest stars. As closing act Jason Aldean performed his set, a gunman opened fire on the throng of concertgoers from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay casino and unleashed over 1,100 rounds of ammunition in just 10 minutes. Fifty-eight people were murdered, and over five hundred others were shot, making it the worst mass-shooting in U.S. history. Using interviews, eyewitness testimony, and haunting cell-phone footage, acclaimed director Charlie Minn recreates the scene from that harrowing night and pieces together the variables surrounding the incident. Focusing on the survivors and their stories, Minn creates a narrative of the shooting and its aftermath that provides some solace and reveals a community that chose to be #VegasStrong in the face of terror.

somewhat repetitive at times, yet overall a sobering tale of tragedy. From a scientific point of view, over 1100 bullets and so few comparatively killed in such a confined place. it has the appearance of a coverup. One can understand what a 6 person fire team can actually output now and what it means to civilians.

Our old friend Charlie Minn (doc: 77 minutes) returns with a doc that opens up with the shooting at Pulse Nightclub - the media says gahy hater but the vce mail Charlie captures says "stop bombing Syria/Iraq" -

The film begins with witness accounts that takes you from watching a music concert, then accounts taking you through 10 min shooting spree from Stephen Paddock, then more accounts of the aftermath/escape...then the "conspiracy" of MGM, then the "Vegas Strong" response.

I found the iPhone footage of the shooting quite intriguing. I have zero experience with guns but the rapid fire shooting certainly brought a reality to the story even though I had read every newspaper article in 2017 about the shooting. You get a very clear understanding of the role the bump stock plays on a rifle.

We definitely have a "Father Knows Best" approach from media in the last decade in regards to the reporting of these types , or many types of crimes. It's all about spin, and avoiding liability. As one library reader commented, this week the FBI released a report saying they had no idea what Paddock's motive was. He was just trying to gain fame they said. Yet Oct 2017 newspaper reports clearly exposed the issues when they commented on his family. No talk policy i guess.

The doc focuses on the victims giving no acknoledgement to Paddock. Therefore the background story can be a little sparse. I'd like to see a PBS Frontline doc on Paddock, even though US newspapers did some pretty in depth writing on him.

Much of the horror of that night of October 1, 2017 are still weighing on my mind as gun violence rages on. Though the documentary does not shed any light on the motive of the mass murderer Paddock or conspiracies, there are a number of live interviews with local reporters and victims who provided their first hand experience during and after their ordeal. The film makers hinted that the biggest obstacle to add more color to the horrific attack is the lawsuits and counter-suits between the victims and Casino. Also, the lawyers from the victims pointed out that the LVPD is run by sheriff Joe Lombardo who was elected in large part by donations from MGM, the corporation that runs the Mandalay Bay hotel. (What was left out is the FBI also concluded "there was no single or clear motivating factor" behind the attack, and that Paddock's actions were inspired by obtaining "a certain degree of infamy via a mass casualty attack."

Note:
-Finally on Dec 18, 2018, more than a year after the Las Vegas mass shooting, bump stocks are officially set to become illegal. Owners of bump stocks have 90 days to destroy them beyond repair or surrender them to the government, the Trump administration announced on Tuesday.
-The footage shown in the documentary seems to be collated from prior news reports and without closeup of gun shot victims; most graphic was a low resolution clip showing a few injured victims carried into a local hospital.
-Reported today: An FBI Behavioral Analysis Unit did not find a "single or clear motivating factor" for gunman Stephen Paddock's actions, but concluded he was in financial trouble and had difficulty coping with his age:

I cried as I listened to the survivor's stories and saw the victim's photos. I struggled to watch but I needed to know the circumstances and perhaps determine how to avoid another tragedy. One 20 year veteran shined much controversy on the delayed police reaction and the cover up by MGM studio who owned the stadium and hotels. The venue itself was vulnerable in layout and lacked marked exit signs. Many questions include how did the crazy killer manage to sneak in over 20 bags of weapons to his room and why was there no anti-sniper protocol in place? It's enough to make one wary to go to well attended events.
