George C. Scott leads an all-star cast in this imaginative suspense thriller that attempts to shed some light on the historic disaster even as its intricate plot unfolds. As a colonel assigned by the German government to make certain no one sabotages the Hindenburg on its transatlantic voyage, Scott suspects everyone aboard the luxury ship - particularly a German countess (Anne Bancroft) vehemently opposed to the Nazi regime. Stylishly directed by Robert Wise and co-starring Burgess Meredith, Gig Young, Charles Durning and Richard Dysart, The Hindenburg brings to life one of aviation's most infamous events and one of the screen's most engrossing mysteries.

Speculative drama with George C Scott playing a thinking man's officer as he gets unwillingly tasked with security for the Hindenberg, at the same time he and his wife are considering leaving Germany as it careens into Nazi darkness. This is a movie from the 70s, so while the sets were well-made for the time period (including the 25-foot model), much relies on the dialogue which unfortunately is sometimes wooden or trite. The saboteur has some nuance, but the female characters are pretty much stereotypical. Funny scene with the privileged Countess turning out to be a deadly card shark in a game with two exploiters. The ending intercuts with actual footage from the crash and the famous voice-over; the visual intercutting is choppy and mildly annoying.

It was highly likely that the 1937 Hindenburg Disaster was due to hydrogen gas leaking very slowly through pinholes in the membranes of the gas bags and through the 100.% cloth outer skin, mixing with air at the surface of the outer skin, the presence of a highly flammable metal based paint on the outer skin, and the formation of electrostatic charge on the outer skin. Despite this high probability, this film depicts the great disaster as an act of sabotage.

The sets are amazing. The film captures trans-Atlantic luxury travel aboard a zeppelin. However, there is not much suspense. IMHO, I would rate "The Hindenburg" at 3.50 stars.

This is a 1975 American drama directed by Robert Wise, based on the 1937 disaster of the German airship Hindenburg.
It is a highly speculative yet mind-boggling and breath-taking thriller with a conspiracy theory to the destruction of the airship.
