Coleman Silk has a secret. A terrible, fifty-year-old secret that the esteemed college professor has kept hidden from everyone - including his wife, his children and his down-and-out young lover - and it's about to ruin his entire life.

Perhaps the respect which Philip Roth enjoys was key to bringing this to the screen. However, Roth reveals a number of things about the book in 'An Open Letter to Wikipedia' which was published in the New Yorker and is available on line that sheds some light on why this is not a satisfying movie, in my opinion.
In part, Roth's contention that Silk's ostracization for a infelicitous choice of words is the whole determinant of what follows. Some might agree, but for me this was not the issue that framed the climactic moment. There is some logic in thinking that if you have Nicole Kidman in a movie, it will substantially be shaped her character.
So, at least for me, when it is not clear what exactly the movie is about, power goes out of it, and individual moments are more exposed. Are they brilliant, shallow, convincing? Is it a bit of kitchen sink?
The book on the other hand was generally very well received. Still, the movie has not encouraged me to pick it up.

This movie was a strong 4 1/2 a really wonderful movie with lots of excellent acting that goes hand in hand with a great story. Almost good enough to get some media accolades. We really enjoyed, however if you are someone that has a difficult time following a movie and it's internal content and find it easier to follow a movie by its action scenes and loud music then don't select this one. It takes listing, following and understanding to really appreciate. This is a movie that we will reflect on in the years to come.

Odd story with a twist. Really had it figured out in the first 20 minutes. Hopkins is great.

Overall, a pretty good film however it's better enjoyed if you don't over-analyze or ask logical questions as the film progresses. My view contradicts one stated in the film: had Hopkin's character revealed his true race, this would have proven he had racist views, and would have supported the student's allegations.

Worth a watch. Only Kidman and Hopkins' good acting made the May/December romance work.

Anthony Hopkins excels in any film he's in, regardless of its caliber or content. This was good; not staggering, but good. Different. His ethnicity issue just didn't feel entirely believable, nor did his May/December relationship with Kidman.

This movie is phenomenal! Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman are two broken people who start a relationship. Unbelievably good!

An interesting love story/thriller. Hopkins is great as the professor who hides and denies his background to become more acceptable in society.

Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman deliver their best in this film based on the novel by Philip Roth. It has many levels and surprises as the story unfolds. You will be well rewarded for watching.
