Because Lady Lucinda Pembroke's paintings have a reputation for being prophetic, her picture of a handsome man laughing as a ship sinks causese widespread gossip. Londoners are sure it must be Sir Trevelyan Rochester, gloating as his wealthy cousin drowns. Lucinda hides from the gossip at a remote cottage--only to encounter Rochester there.
