After her mother's sudden death, Karen finds herself acting as full-time caregiver to Kelli, her older sister who was born with a developmental disability. Karen starts to grasp the true aspect of Trevor's - one of Kelli's support workers - relationship with her mother. Scotiabank Giller Prize-winning author Lynn Coady delivers a creepy and wholly compelling novel about the complex relationship between mothers and daughters and sisters, women and men, and who to trust and how to trust in a world where the supposedly selfless act of caregiving can camouflage a sinister self-interest.

It took me a long time to read this book. It is written in very prosaic language and the plot takes a long time to get into gear. I persevered and it was a slog, but I’m kinda/sorta glad I did. The very ordinariness of the setting and characters which seemed so boring for most of the novel, is actually what ended packing a major punch by the end of the novel. I think it would have been a better read if it had been shorter, but without giving anything away, the story has stuck with me.

It was an ok read.
However, I found the narrator’s referrals to certain future events frustrating. I would just be getting into it ,and poof , she would start referring to future events . By doing this you knew where it was going and the suspense was lost , at least for me.
It may be just me as I note others really liked this book.

just finished this haunting book! The writing is a little slow in telling the story however its slowly puling you into the story! The feelings of the younger sister towards her older mentally handicaped sister is real and true to life. The build up to the conclusion of this story is also well done. A really good story...well done!
