After a banker's children lose their nanny due to her frustration with them, a change in the wind blows in a magical nanny who matches the chilren's qualifications, but not those of their very proper father. As Mary Poppins helps the children magically explore the world around them, their father grows increasingly disapproving of her methods, and he must eventually deal with his own distance from his children.

Always loved this musical. Now as an adult watching it with our child we fell in love all over again.
Random fun fact for the adults: Mrs Banks is played by the same actress as the mean mother-in-law in The Ref. It's just fun seeing her in polar opposite roles in movies intended for totally different audiences.

Come on. This is about as good as musicals and family films get. What's not to like? Don't nit-pick, just immerse yourself and enjoy.

Julie Andrews is a Treasure! I love her movie musicals. Add to the wonderful Julie Andrews, a Disney movie, a step-forward in live/animation, a great ensemble cast, and a greatly written script and song booklet; you have a winner of a movie. This movie is fun to re-watch and to see what you learn from it this time.

I liked the musical DVD. In 1963 or 1964, the movie industry tried to revive the musical from the 1940-1950's. There is very little dialogue in the film. There is lots of singing and dancing (both are well done). The story is not very strong; but, the story is strong enough to keep the plot moving. Some of the movie is silly and nonsense. That was done on purpose to make the story light and humorous. The acting was well done. In 1964 it was the latest graphic ability in the movie industry. It was quite exciting to watch. It is good for all ages.

OUTSTANDING 1964 film which I rate up there with 'Wizard of Oz' - not sure how I hadn't seen it until just now. Dick Van Dyke and Julie Andrews are fab as the two leads - and all the other production aspects, including the integrated animation, are also top notch.

The mix of live action and animation was novel and well pulled off in the day, and it's still good today. The music numbers are fantastic, but the overall plot of the movie is kind of boring.

at age 16 i was waay too mature to go see MP. forty years later at long last i was ready. and fully satisfied, in spite of quaint special effects, cutting edge in the early 60s. anyways, you and yours could do worse than indulge the library's dvd.

oh yeah, and *this* edition includes a second disk, gifting several MakingOf and other extras. in 2012 the much missed late great roger ebert gave it unqualified thumbs up:

This is the first time I see this movie, but I like Julia Andrews in The Sound of Music better.
