I liked it as the first in the series with Lucas Davenport. Lucas has his faults as the story progresses. The *horrible* villain preys on women. Lucas has sex with multiple female partners without commitment. For another gritty series about a detective who thinks with his brain, not his lower extremities, read about Detective David Robicheaux by James Lee Burke. If you have not read him, start with Neon Rain because his personal life changes considerably as the books progress. Despite my misgivings, I am looking forward to reading more in the PREY series, I just hope that Lucas grows up, finds a loving relationship with a woman he respects, and leaves his adolescent period behind. I recommend Rules of Prey for excellent writing and plot that ratchets up the tension as it progresses. But as I read the book, I began to think who the "prey" refers to in the series title: the villain? Or is it Lucas himself?
