Similar to the book by the same name, Miss Peregrine’s follows the story of teenage Jacob. A family tragedy sends him to an island in Wales, where he discovers the decaying ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, bombed during the Second World War. Strangely enough, the children may still be alive. Stranger still, Jacob might be one of them. First off, I want to say that the visual effects in this movie were gorgeous. From the creepy Hollows to the underwater scenes, every bit was elegant and graceful, in a weird way. Despite this, or maybe because of this, the movie felt sugar coated compared to the book. Jacob is a wide-eyed child, Miss Peregrine is young and hip, and everything is incredibly clean cut (except for the villains.) The entire book series was also compressed into two hours, which I disliked as the story was completely different from the one I had read. Keep in mind, that these opinions are all in relation to how the movie compares with the book it is based on. Without reading the book, Miss Peregrine's stands on its own as an excellent movie. But very few movies do their books justice, and this was not one of them. I would recommend either reading the book or watching the movie; but doing both may leave you disappointed. @viedelabibliothèque of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library I liked the movie but to be honest the book was better. I decided to watch the movie on the weekend in the middle of the night. The movie was really interesting and cool because of the special effects and acting. The movie is a bit different from the book because in the book Emma is supposed to have fire powers but in the movie she’s flying. I was a bit surprised to see Asa Butterfield from TBITSP because I didn't even know he was going to be in the movie. There's not much to say about the movie but that it's cool and interesting. But I prefer the book, like the bookworm I am :) .4/5 stars. - @AquafinaAstro of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
