This is a good addition to the Ian Rutledge series of mysteries. The authors are excellent at creating the atmosphere of WWI so much so that I think one of them is at least an amateur historian fascinated by this specific range of years. The other thing, not as evident in this novel as others, but still there is a familiarity with PTSD. They are writing from inside that experience, not from a remove. I like the Hamish character - if he can be said to be a character - even though they don't use him as a device as frequently anymore. I wish they would. It is one aspect of the Ian Rutledge character is the utterly unique in the history of British detectives. The reader can see what it is like to come back from war and be haunted by it in the midst of carrying on.
