The author's understated but realistic style of spy novels in the tradition of Le Carré and Greene should appeal more to those that prefer this style over the fast-paced action, spy thrillers with impressive armaments, chases and explosions. However, this book is disappointing even for such fans. It just feels like a half-hearted attempt at squeezing one more book out of the protagonist ex-spy. The writing is very flat and uninspiring as if written by a bored journalist describing a story. It does not even come close to the excellent earlier novels in this series such as A Foreign Country. The plot is so thin and sparse that it would be difficult to stretch it into even a single one-hour episode of a TV series without the viewers falling asleep midway.
