I don't know about you, but many times I have wondered how my life would have played out if I had made different choices at several critical times in my life. With that, I have even invented an alternate reality in my head from time to time. So, it was extremely interesting that Jeffrey Archer wrote this remarkable novel with a dual scenario for one man. It was a tad confusing at the start until I caught on to what was going on but once I did it was a mystery to learn how Alex and Sasha's life would eventually intersect. After Alexander’s father was murdered in Leningrad, Russia in 1968, he and his mother must escape the country with hope to survive. With the aide of her brother, they must chose between a container ship bound for America or Great Britain. With the toss of a coin, Alexander (Alex) and his mother go to New York while in the other scenario, Sasha and his mother go to London. They both are destined to become leaders, excel in their field, marry, have one child and overcome the many pitfalls and challenges that occur. The story switches from one to another throughout the next thirty years until one common reality forces both to return to Russia at the same time! I could not put the book down due to the gripping story line for each man and reach the end to reveal the mystery. This appears to be a stand alone novel but the surprise ending leaves the reader in typical Jeffrey Archer style with a cliffhanger. Highly recommend, great writing!
